Role Models Contest Winners
September 2000

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in our Role Model contest. The judges were impressed with the sincerity and quality of your writing, and were touched by many of the stories.

Atlantic Canadaís First Nation Help Desk will recognize each participant. However, the most important recognition that can be given is to share your work with your role models, when possible. Your work is now published on the internet for the world to see! We encourage you to make the effort to provide that special recognition to all of the wonderful role models represented in your stories.

Elementary Winner
Tony receiving award. Mother and brother look on proudly.

Tony Sylliboy
Grade 5, Eskasoni, NS
(My Parents)

My role models are my Mom and my grand dad.  Their names are Tonia and Maxim Sylliboy.  The reason I picked them is because I think they are heroes.  They are heroes because they saved two lives in 1999.  Two kids were drowning at Beach Road and my Mom, grand dad, and Anastacia jumped in to save them.  They got caught in the current and my grand dad and Anastacia drowned.

Even though my granddad is gone I will always remember how brave he was.  Anastacia, my Mom, and my granddad will receive medals of bravery in a few weeks.  I will always remember my granddad in my heart and I only wish that he was around to see how many people miss him.  I will always try to do good in my life just like my granddad did in his life.

Jr. High Winner
Amanda (front centre) with Honourable Mention Classmates
Amanda Hinks
Grade 9, Conne River, Nfld
(My Classmates)

I have more than one role model. My role models are the girls in my class. I think that they are as beautiful as Goddesses, and I wish that I was as beautiful as they are. They are nice and caring and they donít always care about themselves. I think the world over them because they chose me to be their friend.

God never blessed me with beauty and a perfect body and I accept that, but the girls in my class do have these things. I may not be popular but when they talk to me and hang around with me I feel like the most lucky person alive because I know such wonderful people. They helped me feel better when I am down and they reassure me that everything would be okay and that I am as pretty as they are. They taught me to not always mope around and to stop feeling sorry for myself and to think of positive things instead of negative things. They made me realize that I was not the only one with problems and they are not all that perfect that I thought they were. To me they will always be my friends and I will always be there for them like they were for me.

High School Winner
Julia Pineo (left) with Janis Walker & Laura Bernard (right)

Julia Pineo
Grade 10, Horton, NS
(Janis Walker)

Janis Walker!

She is a Horton First Nation Band Member;
A Band Manager;
A Band Councillor;
My Aunt;
My friend and my role model.

I have always looked up to my Aunt Janis. She has so much knowledge. For a time she was the National leader for the Native Women. She involved me in as many meetings and Native Women issues as she could. This has made it easier for me at school, because where I go to school there is only a few natives that attend and they sometimes ask me questions about Natives and Aunt Janis always gives me the right answer.

Aunt Janis is very proud to be a Mi'kmaq and this made me proud of who I am. Her knowledge goes beyond Native issues and she gets along with people of all ages.

She can laugh, tell a joke, be so kind and yet so strong. She can be humble, but always has dignity.

Janis Walker influenced my life. Her knowledge has given me opportunities that I wouldn't even have known about.

I would like to be like her some day.
