Atlantic Canada's First Nation Help Desk

February, 2000

All were very impressed with the entries.  Deciding the “winners” in each category was very difficult.  In fact, we consider all who entered to be winners!  All who entered will receive special recognition!

Special congratulations go to those who received “honourable mention” designations from the judges.  Rita Joe, our elder who supported the contest proudly remembers her first “honourable mention” recognition as fondly as any of her many awards.  “It is so important,” she says, “to write our feelings, to share, and to communicate.”

Winners

Rita Joe presents awards to elementary winners.
Elementary
Kathleen Googoo
Whycocomagh, NS

Kathleen’s story, “My Sister, Dawn” tells of her love for her sister, and how proud she is of her for following her heart.  The story’s concluding line, “I don't like how people grow up and move away but I am proud of my sister Dawn because she is doing what she wants to do with her life” was noted as “memorable” by the contest judges.
